What the name means

Leiolophius ferruginea means roughly “rust-coloured smooth-crest”: from leio- (smooth) and lophius (crest), and ferruginea (rust-coloured). Every species name is built from its genes: the dorsal fin and body plan give the genus, the colouring gives the species name, and the tail and mouth the last word.

How to find one

Dive to hadal trenches (it opens at diving level 28) and look for an angler with Rust Vent colouring, or breed for it: you need all five of its traits to show at once, and some of them may be recessive, hidden in a parent’s second gene copy. The breeding screen shows the exact odds. See how fish genetics work.
