How to play

A fish breeding game where every fish is one of a kind

Fish of Ganymede is a free online fish breeding game you play in the browser. You catch alien fish in the dark ocean under the ice of Ganymede, pair them, watch the eggs hatch and slowly breed toward the fish you have in mind. Every fish is grown from its own genome and drawn in 3D, so the fish you breed has never existed before.

It is also a game you play with other people: the market, stud services, trades, the weekly fish show and the race to be the first breeder of a new species all happen in one shared world that never resets.

The breeding loop

  • Dive under the ice to catch wild fish. Deeper zones hold rarer fish (see ocean depths).
  • Pick two parents. Before you commit, the game shows the exact chance of every trait in the clutch.
  • Lay a clutch of eggs, which hatch after a few hours. Feed and upgrade your favourites while you wait.
  • Keep the best, sell or trade the rest, and pair again. Over generations you can fix rare traits in your line.

What you can breed for

Body plan (17 of them, from sleek torpedoes to anglers, dragonfish and gulpers), colouring and pattern, scales from matte to glass and prismatic, eyes, lures, fins, tail shape, size and length. Traits follow real inheritance rules: dominant and recessive genes, blended number traits and occasional mutations. The breeding and genetics guide explains them in detail.

Why breeders play it

  • Discovery: there are 42,840 species and over 290 billion possible fish. The first player to breed a species is credited forever.
  • Collecting: a species book, crowns for the longest fish of each body plan, ribbons from the weekly fish show.
  • A real economy: a market with escrow, stud services and direct trades between players.
  • Fair: nothing for sale changes genes or creates fish; chests are earned by playing.

Start breeding

You can start playing right away with no sign-up: pick a diver name and you get six wild fish to begin with. If you like it, save your fish for free and play on any device.
