Diving Ganymede’s ocean: the six depth zones
Ganymede’s ocean is thought to be about 100 km deep, buried under a thick shell of ice. In Fish of Ganymede you dive into it to catch wild fish. Every fish has a home depth read from its genes, and every dive goes to one of six zones. Deeper zones open as your diving level rises, which you raise by diving.
The zones
| Zone | Depth | Diving level | Energy | Rare or better | Mutated |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Under the ice | 0–300 m | 1 | 5 | 15% | 0% |
| Twilight drift | 300 m–2 km | 4 | 6 | 20% | 5% |
| Midnight water | 2–8 km | 10 | 7 | 26% | 10% |
| The abyss | 8–25 km | 18 | 8 | 33% | 16% |
| Hadal trenches | 25–60 km | 28 | 9 | 40% | 24% |
| The vent floor | 60–100 km | 40 | 10 | 48% | 32% |
Who lives where
Bright, sturdy reef shapes such as butterflyfish and boxfish live near the ice. Lures, glowing or telescope eyes, glass bodies, huge mouths and deep-sea body plans (anglers, dragonfish, gulpers, oarfish) pull a fish deeper. A dive mostly brings up fish whose home is that zone, so each zone feels different, and some fish are only common far down.
Diving level and XP
Every dive earns XP: more in deeper zones, plus extra for each fish, for rarer catches, for species new to you and for world firsts. Each new level pays pearls. The first new zone opens within a day of play; the vent floor is a long-term goal.
Your diving level also opens station upgrades, such as a warmer nursery for faster hatching, so your station grows as you explore.
Tips
- Energy refills by 1 every 10 minutes; deeper dives cost more, so plan them.
- A lucky lure item tips a dive toward rarer fish; a golden net catches one more fish.
- Mutated deep-sea fish are great breeding stock: their new traits can be passed on.
