Leiomuraena ferruginea

The first Leiomuraena ferruginea ever found, swimming live. Its hidden genes stay hidden.

Leiomuraena ferruginea lyrirostrata is a species of alien fish in Fish of Ganymede: an eel with a low dorsal fin, Rust Vent colouring, a lyre tail and a beak mouth. It lives in hadal trenches, 25 km to 60 km under Ganymede’s ice. It was first found by Ganymede Traders on 6 November 2026.

What the name means

Leiomuraena ferruginea means roughly “rust-coloured smooth-moray”: from leio- (smooth) and muraena (moray), and ferruginea (rust-coloured). Every species name is built from its genes: the dorsal fin and body plan give the genus, the colouring gives the species name, and the tail and mouth the last word.

How to find one

Dive to hadal trenches (it opens at diving level 28) and look for an eel with Rust Vent colouring, or breed for it: you need all five of its traits to show at once, and some of them may be recessive, hidden in a parent’s second gene copy. The breeding screen shows the exact odds. See how fish genetics work.
