What the name means

Acanthocyclopterus aurorae means roughly “of the dawn spine-round fin”: from acantho- (spine) and cyclopterus (round fin), and aurorae (of the dawn). Every species name is built from its genes: the dorsal fin and body plan give the genus, the colouring gives the species name, and the tail and mouth the last word.

How to find one

Dive to the abyss (it opens at diving level 18) and look for a lumpsucker with Aurora colouring, or breed for it: you need all five of its traits to show at once, and some of them may be recessive, hidden in a parent’s second gene copy. The breeding screen shows the exact odds. See how fish genetics work.
